About the project

Ocean State BTM in the Pascoag Utility District (PUD) is the first utility scale battery storage facility in Rhode Island, providing increased reliability for 5,000 customers during peak electricity demand days in the PUD service area.

The facility is a standalone lithium-ion battery storage system that participates both as a peak load reducer for PUD and in the ISO-NE wholesale marketplace. The facility will allow PUD customers to benefit from the avoidance of approximately USD12m cost associated with the build-out of a new circuit. In addition to providing a call option for distribution line relief (the non-wires solution portion of the agreement), there is a split savings component associated with peak clipping between Agilitas and PUD.

Rhode Island Lt. Governor Sabina Matos, joined by Dr. Christopher Abhulime, Deputy Chief of Staff from Office of the Governor, Christopher Kearns, Interim Commissioner from Office of Energy Resources, Jeffrey Diehl, CEO of Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank and Mike Kirkwood, General Manager of Pascoag Utility District, attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the facility on August 15th 2022. In 2020, Gov. McKee signed an executive order committing Rhode Island to meet 100% of its electricity demand with renewables and non-fossil fuel resources by 2030.
